Finally Found!

by Brianne
(Albia, Iowa)

I have searched endlessly for the perfect haircut for my Shih Tzu and finally found it. My baby has very long hair that is just very fine and tends to curl so my dreams of having a show coat will not work.

The face can be boxed or left slightly longer which is what i plan on doing, both secured with a top knot. The sides can be shaved shorter (around 3/4") or they can be left long in a beautiful skirt, similar to the cocker cut, which is what i will be doing. The tail and legs are left long, most groomers consider this the straight column effect.

My baby is a 1 year old and will be going to get groomed for the first time in a couple of days, I will post lots of pictures, especially some befores and afters.

It's me agian
by: Brianne

Ok... So i got my little pupcake back today and after nearly crying my eyes out I have come to the conclusion that I am going to groom my dogs myself from now on. Several different trips to numerous groomers, even traveled to the larger cities and always unhappy. I am a licensed cosmetologist and I think that I am just pickier than most people.
I think I will take them for monthly visits for a blow out, nails trimmed, pads shaved, bows and top knots, and anal glands expressed.
Let me know your opinions!!!

Highly agree

Hi Brianne, I too am a licensed cosmotologist and when I got my 2 teddies I was told by a groomer that cutting dog hair was totally different than cutting human hair.

Well after a couple trips to the groomer I was so disappointed I started doing them both myself for the last year. I like to cut them exactly the way I want and not just shear them down.

Part puppy and part teddy bear cut

by Gerry Dayton
(Pensacola FL)

I had this cut done for years in Atlanta and am having a hard time explaining to groomers in Florida. The ears and tail are long, face rounded and cut short but not too short, body is shaved or cut very short and legs are cut puppy style with back legs looking like your pet is wear chaps. I hope there's a name for this cut or the groomer in Atlanta has invented a new style. Whatever it is I think it's very cute. Have you heard of this style?
Can't send picture because groomers aren't understanding my request. This style is much lower maintenance to me.

Please let me know if you have heard of it?

No name for this cut

I have been grooming professionally for 27 years and have owned Shih Tzu for 5 years, shown them for 2. There is no named cut as you describe: I expect the groomer who did the trim either made it up as he/she went along or came up with it at some point and uses it on Shih Tzu and other drop-coated breeds.

Hair styles for my Shih Tzus

I like the puppy cut and teddy bear cuts the best. My dogs are pets and it's easier to keep.

shih tzu show cut

I just got my first shih tzu, Maya, who had been neglected for some years. Her hair was shaved to her skin and her next owner never put a brush to her since she got her. The poor little girl still barely had any hair growing in and was itching all over. I have been letting her hair grow naturally with daily grooming and weekly baths. Her hair now has a lion cut look with the heavier longer hair around her front portion of her body and she looks great but now I want to go for the show cut. As a result of poor breeding, she has some flaws that won't be as noticeable but she is still a beautiful dog. I actually look forward to grooming time with her because we get to bond and she basically becomes putty in my hands and loves the daily grooming.

Feed her well...put apple cider vinegar on her food, 1 tablespoon every meal will help her skin. PUT VIRGIN COCONUT OIL on her skin 2 hours before bathing.
