The Maltese Shih Tzu is a popular designer Shih Tzu mix, also known by a few other names such as Mal-Shi, Malti Tzu or Maltezu.
This mixed breed is a cross between the Shih Tzu and the Maltese. The American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes this cross breed.
The Mal-Shi's weight ranges from 6-15 pounds and they are normally 8-12 inches tall. They come in several different colors, such as black, tan, brown, white or any combination of these colors.
The Mal-Shi have a long & straight coat. Because the Maltese is a single coat breed, this means the mix sheds less than purebred Shih Tzus which have a double coat.
Shedding isn't usually too much of an issue with Shih Tzus, as long as you take care of them with regular brushing and combing to remove the loose hairs in the undercoat.
The mix which has the qualities of a Maltese and Shih Tzu in one package is typically low shedding and hypoallergenic. However, the Malti Tzu will still require regular combing and brushing to help reduce tangling.
The Malti Tzu is your friendly, affectionate family companion. Both of its 'origin breeds' are wonderful little dogs, eager to please and with a great temperament. So the mix typically shares these traits. The Maltezu's are also known for their fearless and gentle personality. Many can also be real little entertainers, with antics that are funny to watch.
One of the owners contributing to this site described their Maltezu as the sweetest companion you could ask for ... very lively and loves kids and adults alike.
Another said they are the nicest easy going, pleasant little folk and that she would have another in a heartbeat.
They are fairly easy to train but can be stubborn if not socialized at an early age. They need a place to exercise, such as a small yard. They do tend to be talkative - one owner described hers as very vocal ... moaning and groaning when content and yappy when excited.
The average life expectancy for this mix breed is 12 to 14 years.
