Lhasa Apso Shih Tzu - Shih Apso or Lhasa Tzu

The Lhasa Apso Shih Tzu is a popular designer Shih Tzu mix, also known as Shih Apso or Lhasa Tzu.

This mixed breed is a cross between the Shih Tzu and the Lhasa Apso.

The American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club both recognize the cross breed.

Sometimes its hard to tell the difference between a Lhasa Apso and a Shih Tzu.

This is because the origins of the two breeds were both from Tibet.  In fact, there is some research to support that the Shih Tzu breed was a descendent of the Lhasa Apso and Pekinese breeds.

So don't be surprised if your Shih Apso mix looks similar to purebreed Shih Tzus!

The Shih Apso's coat comes in all colors and is normally long and silky with some curls.  However, some of the mixed breed may inherit the rougher coat of the Lhasa Apso, so its hair could be a little harder in feel.  These dogs do shed a little and require frequent grooming. A change in coat colour as the pup gets older is also quite common.

The Shih Apso's weight ranges from 13-20 pounds and they stand 10-15 inches tall. That's about the same size or a bit larger than purebreed shihtzus.

Behaviour and Characteristics

The Lhasa Apso Shih Tzu is a highly affectionate, friendly and confident breed. They are an extremely active and energetic dog that is generally good with children.

They are typically bolder than their purebreed cousins, and can also be quite protective.  One owner described his delightful mix as a 'dog that wants to sit in your lap and guard your stuff'!

The Lhasa Tzu is very intelligent but they can be stubborn and difficult to train.  Pups can be very enthusiastic chewers.  Some owners report that their animals can also be moody and jealous, but find them charming and loveable anyway!

It also seems a common personality trait that Shih Apsos are good with their own family, but a little wary of strangers.  Not a 'love everyone' type of breed.  In one forum, several dog owners agreed that a perfect description of their pet was that 'she likes strangers; she just doesn't trust them.  After a while, she'll warm up a bit'.

Their average life expectancy is 12-15 years.
