Bichon Shih Tzu - Shichon or Zuchon
The Bichon Shih Tzu is a popular Shih Tzu mix, also known as the Zuchon or Shichon (sometimes spelt Shih-chon). This mixed breed is a cross between the Shih Tzu and the Bichon Frise. The American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes the Bichon Shih Tzu.
The Shichon's weight ranges from 7-12 pounds and they are 9-12 inches tall. They are generally white like the Bichon Frise but can vary depending on the colors of the parents. Typically the shichon will have a flat face like a purebred Shih Tzu and a fluffy coat like the Bichon Frise. However, the look can vary widely depending on whether the dog favors the Shih Tzu or Bichon Frise side of its ancestry. Their appearance doesn't usually change much from puppy to adult. The Shichon has a double coat. The outercoat is curly and fluffy and the undercoat is soft and silky. The undercoat is generally 3-4 inches in length. They are considered hypoallergenic due to not shedding much at all, therefore Shichon's are great for individuals that suffer from allergies. The Bichon Shih Tzu requires regular combing and brushing to keep the coat from growing too long and to reduce matting and tangling. The Zuchon can have a top knot if the hair on top of the head is kept approximately 3 inches in length or longer. The Zuchon is your classic lapdog and they get along with children and other pets very well. The Bichon Frise breed has long been appreciated for its cheerful personality, and a Shih Tzu Bichon mix usually inherits this trait. Affectionate, playful and loyal are often words used to describe the Shichon. They are very intelligent and love to learn, therefore are easy to train. Their small size makes them an ideal dog for any living arrangement, including city living. The Shichon's are also known for their sudden bursts of energy, a classic trait found in the Bichon Frise ancestry. The average life expectancy for this Shih Tzu mix is 15 years or more.
